The Hottest of Hatches // 2016 Lapiz Blue Golf R

The ultimate incarnation of the Volkswagen Golf family, the Golf R is both a comfortable family sedan and a beastly performance hatch powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 292bhp. As a part of the Golf family that has been making an appearance on Car and Driver’s 10Best list for many years running, a part MotorTrend’s Car of the Year award, and many other distinctions, this Golf isn’t just your dad’s stylish hatch -although good looks are a factor. It is much, much more than that.

That being said, imagine our excitement when Brian Massoll, Volkswagen of Naplesย Managing Partner, decided to buy this Golf R and let us get our hands on it. Suspension? Wheels? Exhaust? Those are the standard questions we ask ourselves. There are so many possibilities it’s almost overwhelming.

Wanting to go low, Brian opted for a suspension makeover and replaced stock with some high-quality Bilstein PSS B14 coilovers. After some adjustments, the car was sitting low enough to improve handling and ride quality.

With a gorgeous color of Lapiz Blue Metallic, we knew a lot of different wheels could work flawlessly on this car. In the end, he opted for some 19″ BBS XA pieces, which subtly enhance the appearance of the car and stand out just enough to say hey.

Meanwhile, our Parts Manager, Tony, was building his own Golf R. Now we had two tasteful Golf R’s on our hands! The logical thing to do? Pit them in a dual against each other (evil manical laughter)! Okay maybe not, but we did conduct a twinning photoshoot with them. That’s close enough, right? Regardless, it was a pretty exciting week for us here to have two Golf R’s in the works.
